Hello my little ones,
As you completed the Thrively lesson, I hope you thought a little bit about who you are and the strengths that you bring to our community. I know, we all know, that we all come from different backgrounds and have had different experiences in life. As most of you already know, I never knew my mom. I was raised by my grandmother, who was retched, and my father was an alcoholic. Still, I learned early on that from where I came did not define who I was and who I would become. Some of us have strong, nuclear families. While others of us are being raised in very similar situations as I was or may have even less of a traditional family structure or experience. What does that mean to us, when we explore our roots, our culture, our indigenous self? Well, that is part of the exploration isn't it? As you continue this journey, a part of it is to explore who YOU are. It is also for you to think about what defines you and what matters. Growing up, I didn't have very many role models. I think I can count them on one hand and still have some fingers left over - and they were not family. Mr. Garvey embarrased me about sucking my thumb in school, and so I stoppled. Ms. Boynton taught me about the importance of deodorant and Ms. Greene taught me that if I didn't have something nice to say I should say nothing at all. A lot of the rest, I had to figure out for myself. So, what do you have to figure out for yourself? This project started out as a way to explore our families and our roots, our customs, our traditions, why they are traditions and what makes our culture, our culture. Since it's an exploration, let's continue to explore - into our future. There are a number of things from which you can choose:
How do you create your tree? Log into CANVA with your school email and search Family Tree. I've attached a copy of my family tree. I only have my kids and grandkids now. The rest, who knows. You can also use Pixton as an alternative to tell a family story or your autobiographical poem. You can create a Google Doc (attached to the Google Classroom assignment) and write it out too. REMEMBER: The goal of this activity is to GET TO KNOW YOURSELF - so that you can better love yourself, appreciate yourself, and know your worth! If you need help, let someone know. Let me know. Don't stress. Don't feel uncomfortable. And, shhhh, no one needs to know what you chose, what you write or what you design. Love, Ms. Torres |

Good Morning,
Remember that this month we are looking at Indigenous Cultures, including OUR OWN. What does it mean to be indigenous? Why are YOU indigenous? Today you will work on watching this Thrively video, either with your teacher or independently. You'll reflect on:
Please write in complete sentences. Do not give me a one sentence summary of the story. Answer the questions in a narrative style. Tell me a story using your answers to the questions. Be prepared to edit your response. Love, Ms. Torres |

Then watch this inspirational story.
As you watch, you may feel nervous, you may feel awkward. Take a deep breath. Don't judge. Don't react in a way that may come across as disrespectful. Life is sometimes tough. What do you need to help you continue moving forward? |
